How storytelling and creativity can transform body image

And how BEYOND THE MIRROR aims to achieve transformation

I believe that our body image is, or comes from, a story that we are telling ourselves. Or perhaps a story that we have been told by other people, and come to believe as the truth.

Both by working with other people and from my own experience, I have observed that even if we don’t truly believe that our body image is a story, by focusing on creative activities that use a range of tools and mediums, we can start to write (or draw, sing, photograph, paint…) a new story about our bodies. And then find ways to see ourselves in that new story.

When we are focused on creating the story, whether it is through writing, speaking, drawing or painting, we focus on the creative act, rather than how we feel about the subject (ourselves and our bodies). Somehow, this encourages the feelings to express themselves without us being aware of the process, and once we identify what we are truly feeling, it becomes easier to shift our mindset.

It is a very intuitive process, and easier to understand by actually going through it.

In the BEYOND THE MIRROR focus groups, I (Leda) will share how creative storytelling through painting and photography helped me to heal my body image issues. I hope that this will help explain the process, and give people an insight into what we might achieve together through the project.

Please DM us if you are interested in finding out more about BEYOND THE MIRROR and/or attending one of our focus groups so we can send you the information.
