Learning about body image through creative process

One creative tool is sensory body maps

These are some examples of SENSORY BODY MAPS—an activity I use as part of a creative body image exploration and healing process.

These body maps look very different, created by very different people. One was created by an artist, but they all had the same effect. The thing I find exciting about this tool is that ANYONE can use it whether they are an artist or not.

Because the PROCESS is what is important, not the end result. The body map does NOT have to be a beautiful work of art!

Even though I am an artist, when I draw my own body map, it tends to be much more diagrammatic than artistic—more like a real MAP of how I feel about my body.

Much like these examples.

What do you think you would learn about your body image if you were to map your body in this way?

I love seeing the people I work with start changing the way the see their bodies, by understanding how to value themselves in ways that aren’t all about how they LOOK!

If sensory body maps feels like the right tool, I could use it with someone in the multimedia storytelling process for BEYOND THE MIRROR. Imagine what that might lead to…
